The Role of Voluntary Agricultural Certification Standards in Quantifying and Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Exploring the Cocoa, Coffee, Palm Oil and Shrimp Aquaculture Sectors

Fri, 10/20/2017 - 16:10

This report investigates the role that voluntary agriculture standards can play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of agricultural commodities. Cocoa, coffee, palm oil and shrimp aquaculture production are the foci of the SNV REDD+, Energy and Agriculture Programme (REAP) and were therefore the focus of the report. Eight voluntary agricultural standards (Aquaculture Stewardship Council, Fairtrade International, Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Practices, International Sustainability and Carbon Certification, Naturland, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, Sustainable Agriculture Network and UTZ Certified) were selected for analysis. We assessed each one to determine the extent to which it addressed production related emissions through its standard or through activities undertaken by the standards organisation.
